A New Chapter: Farewell, Sarah!

Nearly six years ago, Sarah Clay Lindvall was approached to direct a budding women's barbershop chorus in Manhattan soon to be named Sirens of Gotham. Since then, the ensemble has thrived, and by February 2013, became a chartered chapter of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), the world's largest music education organization for women.

Sarah has gone on to lead Sirens of Gotham to two SAI Regional Division AA championships, once with a Most Improved Chorus award for a 76-point jump (2014), and the other, just this year, with the additional honor of representing the region at the Harmony Classic Contest at the SAI Barbershop Competition in St. Louis, MO in the fall of 2018. Sarah herself has won the region’s Novice Director’s Award (2013) and has represented our chorus at countless educational events and symposiums, always looking to refine her skills as a leader and director.

Thanks to Sarah’s distinct artistic vision, our accomplishments span even beyond SAI. We took 3rd place in the 2015 New York Harmony Sweepstakes, appeared on multiple televised broadcasts, starred in a television show, performed in various world-renowned venues, produced many of our own live performances, and hosted a multitude of successful fundraisers.

In celebration of these accomplishments and our bright future, it is with an ever-loving heart that we announce that Sarah and her husband have made the decision to move to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue some amazing new career opportunities and be closer to family. This is a tremendous opportunity for them both, and the chorus wishes them the absolute best in their new home!

Sarah will remain Director of Sirens of Gotham until her departure in September with the aid of Assistant Music Director Stephanie Ofshinsky, who has agreed to step in as the Interim Director while the Management Team conducts the search for a new director. Sarah's final performance as Director of Sirens of Gotham will be at the SAI Region 15 VocalFest Educational Weekend on September 16th at the Sheraton Hotel in Parsippany, NJ. where we will celebrate Sarah and this next chapter of her life.

On a personal note, as someone who was new to barbershop harmony and eager to find a place to sing, I want to say how grateful I am to have found a chorus like this one. It has been an honor to contribute to the ensemble as a singer and a leader, watching Sarah guide us from a small but mighty community of singers to an internationally competitive chorus of 30+. Sarah, your boundless talents, artistic expertise, and contagious joy will be dearly missed. We know that you will enjoy watching Sirens of Gotham continue on the journey for which you so lovingly and expertly set the foundation.

We are hard at work prepping for exciting things to come this year and beyond, including our first appearance on the SAI international stage! To ensure we find a leader who aligns with our mission and values, a Director Search Committee has been formed, chaired by Lead Section Manager and Visual Leader Lana Klemeyer. The committee will be tasked with assisting the Management Team in the selection of a musical leader to continue our upward trajectory.

If you are interested in directing Sirens of Gotham, a rising a cappella chorus with ambitious goals for the coming year, more information will be placed here on our website in the coming weeks, including a full description of the role and application details. An announcement will be made when this material is made available and we are ready to accept applicants. In the meantime, you may preemptively contact the Director Search committee here.

To say that we are grateful for all that Sarah has done for this chorus would be an understatement. We wish her nothing but the best. Wherever life takes her, Sarah will always have a home in New York, New York with Sirens of Gotham.
